Rooted in tradition, nurtured by legends

Mahua Shankar is a devoted disciple of the legendary Padma Vibhushan Pandit Birju Maharaj and a Gandha Bandh Shaagird of the eminent Sarangi maestro, Ustad Ghulam Sabir Khan Ji. Her tryst with Kathak began at the tender age of five, guided first by her parents—her late father Shri Pradeep Shankar and her mother Smt. Rekha Shankar—who instilled in her a deep and enduring love for this classical art form.

She further refined her craft under the guidance of renowned Kathak exponent Smt. Reva Vidhyarthi and later trained at the prestigious Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, as a disciple of Smt. Vaswati Mishra. With a strong foundation shaped by esteemed gurus, Mahua went on to become a dedicated disciple of Pandit Birju Maharaj. At just 14, she was among the youngest in his class and quickly became one of his cherished students.

Her association with Pandit Birju Maharaj evolved from learning to teaching and performing alongside him as part of his group. She remained an integral part of Kalashram—his dance institution—from its inception in 1998 until 2009, immersing herself in rigorous practice, teaching, and stage performances.

Since 2009, Mahua has established herself as an independent performer, captivating audiences in India and across the globe with her refined, expressive, and graceful style.
